CARL hosts Summer Reading Program

July 23, 2010

Fort Leavenworth, Kan. —Are You Ready to Play Outside?” is the title of a children’s book by Mo Willems, read to second-grade School-Age Services children during a recent story time at the Combined Arms Research Library. Willems is a favorite author of CARL Acquisition Librarian Tiffany Konczey, who read three books during the story time. engagement rings settings

We try to get stories that go with the theme of the week, but really the main goal is to keep the kids involved and engaged in the reading and to make it fun,” Konczey said.Story time is part of the Kids Summer Reading Program at CARL. Children involved in Family and Moral, Welfare and Recreation’s Youth Services Summer Camp come to the library every week — kindergartners on Mondays, first-graders on Tuesdays, and second-graders on Thursdays. We have arrangements with the older kids as well; they don’t come for story time because they’re more interested in finding books to read on their own,” Konczey said. The theme for this year’s summer reading program is “Voyage to Book Island,” with prizes and materials supplied by the Department of Defense. Children can still register at the Circulation or Reference Desk. They will get a reading log and packet. Konczey explained the children record either the number of books or the pages read, and in return receive “CARL bucks,” play money they can spend in the store set up just inside the CARLs main entrance. The store is open daily from 10-11 a.m. and 3-4 p.m., and Tuesday’s 6-7 p.m.We’ve had some amazing readers; we’ve had some who have read 10,000 pages already,” Konczey said. Everyone is invited to the end-of-summer reading party set for 4:30 p.m. July 30.There will be cake, a storyteller, a puppet show and an opportunity to get more prizes, Konczey said. “Right now we’re looking at an auction where kids can bid on prizes with some of their summer reading money — that encourages them to save up if they want something big.” ghd straighteners

Konczey added that the Command and General Staff College Foundation has contributed to the program. Thanks to the foundation, this year we get to have quite a blowout,” she said. One of the ideas behind DoD support to the summer reading program is to provide consistency for children moving with their families during the summer months — it doesn’t matter which Army post library they go to, the overall theme will be the same.

The summer reading program is just one of a number of programs for children throughout the year. During the school year the library has a story time program for toddlers and preschoolers every week. This program is supported by volunteers.

If you like books and children, this is a great chance to volunteer!” Konczey said.Others include “Talk Like a Pirate Day” in mid-September and “Read Across America” in March to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

In addition to being one of the Army’s premier military libraries —it was named the Federal Large Library of the Year for 2007 — CARL has resources for everyone. We are really committed to serving as the post library,” Konczey emphasized.CARL has fiction for adults, children and young adults, and a wide variety of other recreational items to include DVDs, books on CD, and PlayAways. They also have a large collection of Army Community Service books, including resume books, deployment books, and books on how to deal with loss and grieving. CARL’s catalog, databases and electronic resources, including e-books and downloadable audio books, are accessible from home. There are even online language programs, especially useful for international officers and their families. All this is available with just a CARL library card. All visitors can use CARL’s resources while in the library, but only those affiliated with the Fort Leavenworth community (active, reserve, retired, family member, DoD civilian, NAF employee, contract employee) are eligible for library cards.
